What Do Heavy Haulage Vehicles Typically Transport?

Nick Sampson • 15 November 2023

Regular transportation of goods, equipment and materials is essential to keep our economy moving. Heavy-weight resources are often manufactured overseas before being transported in land for completion or to be used immediately. As such, we regularly depend on haulage vehicles to ensure the safe delivery of these bulky items, wherever they may be headed.

The practice of transporting weighty goods via large trucks is known as heavy haulage, where this tends to refer to cargo of a length of more than fifty feet or weighing over 80,000 pounds. Drivers need a special licence to be able to drive a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of those on the road around them.

Read on to find out more about the different types of heavy cargo that these vehicles tend to transport.

Construction Machinery

A big part of the heavy haulage industry is the transportation of equipment to be used in construction. Large building projects require huge machinery such as cranes, excavators and bulldozers to get the job done, where specialist equipment often has to be transported across the country.

Boats

Boats are often constructed at great distances from the bodies of water on which they are destined to sail. As such, they typically have to be transported on large trucks to rivers and coastlines across the country, where they can then be utilised to their full potential.

Agricultural Equipment

Farms and agricultural sites also tend to be separated by great distances from the machinery needed to maintain them. Often these pieces of machinery have to be shipped from overseas and transported via a heavy haulage truck, especially if specialist equipment is required.

Shipping Containers

Smaller goods, materials and parts have to be transported inside shipping containers to keep them secure throughout long voyages. These containers are typically very large, where haulage vehicles are essential to get these to various sites so they can be properly filled.

Aeroplanes

Like boats, aeroplanes are incredibly bulky when they are outside of the environment for which they are made. These huge structures have to be transported to airfields and maintenance sites via heavy haulage vehicles, where they can be moved in parts or in larger pieces depending on size limitations.
