What You Need to Know About Container Haulage

Nick Sampson • 14 September 2023

Shipping containers are often seen on boats, but how do they get to their final destination? Container haulage involves transporting containers by road to their desired ports and destinations once they have been transported on ships. This involves the help of a container haulage company, which makes sure the goods are transported safely and efficiently.

Containers come in standard sizes which makes them easily transported by container haulage companies. It’s an ideal way to transport a large volume of items overseas. It aids economies of trade in many different countries.

How does container haulage work?

A specialist container haulage company is responsible for transporting containers by road to their required ports. The vehicles involved in this transportation are specifically designed to support and secure containers, making sure they arrive at their destination safely.

Containers come in two sizes, a twenty-foot equivalent unit and a forty-foot equivalent unit. Forty-foot units are more widely used, but any haulage company will need to FORS registered operators, meaning they are legally allowed to transfer large containers safely.

There are several different containers available:

●     Flat Rack Containers – These come with collapsible sides and are usually used in the transport of boats and cars.

●     Open Side Containers – These can be opened on the side and make it easier to load wider materials.

●     Open Top Containers – These have no roof which means that they can ship large items such as logs or machinery.

●     Refrigerated Containers – These are used for the shipping of perishable items or pharmaceutical goods.

Types of container haulage

There are a number of different types of container haulage, the main ones being:

Standard Haulage

This is the standard type of haulage that is known to be the most cost-effective option which involves the shipping of standard containers.

Sidelifter ‘Wait and Load’ Haulage

It’s common for containers to be delivered to the ground to be unloaded and this is typically done with two lifting cranes located on the vehicle. The container will be lifted onto the ground so it can be loaded and unloaded. This is suitable for a wide range of cargo.

Drop and Collect Haulage

Drop and collect is the process of delivering an empty container and also taking a full one away. It’s a solution for situations where a container cannot be unloaded quickly, helping to cut costs and ensuring flexibility and convenience.
